Digital cinema

Digital cinema is the production, distribution, and projection of motion pictures using digital technology, from image capture and postproduction to theatrical exhibition.

Digital cinematography: The capture of moving images as digital data rather than on photographic film. It replaces photochemical image capture with electronic sensors and digital recording.
Television standards conversion: The process of adapting video between systems with different frame rates, resolutions, or scanning formats. Early electronic cinema experiments inherited methods developed for television video.
Digital image: An image represented as discrete numerical samples, typically arranged as pixels. Digital cinema stores and processes each frame as numerical image data.
Digital color grading: The adjustment of image color and tone using digital tools during postproduction. It gives filmmakers precise control over the appearance of theatrical images.
Film distribution: The processes by which motion pictures are delivered to cinemas, broadcasters, and other exhibition platforms. Digital files transformed theatrical delivery from transporting prints to managing secure data.
Digital intermediate: A postproduction process in which a film's images are scanned or ingested, digitally adjusted, and output for distribution. It brings editing, compositing, and color grading together in a digital pipeline.
Digital Light Processing: A display technology that uses micromirrors to modulate light and form images. Its micromirror chips became a practical basis for early digital cinema projection.
Image sensor: An electronic device that converts incoming light into electrical signals for image formation. It records the light entering a digital cinema camera.
Visual effects: Techniques that create or alter imagery for film and other screen media. Digital production makes complex image compositing and computer-generated scenes practical.
Virtual print fee: A payment mechanism through which distributors helped finance theaters' conversion to digital projection. It shifted the cost of replacing film prints and projectors across the industry.
