Digital identity

A collection of electronic attributes used to identify a person or organization in digital systems. It can include identifiers, credentials, and traits asserted by the subject or by other parties.

Digital identifier: An electronic value that distinguishes an entity within a system or across systems. Usernames, email addresses, and account numbers can each serve as identifiers within a digital identity.
Identity provider: An organization or service that creates, maintains, or asserts identity information for users. A provider may authenticate users and supply identity attributes to other services.
Electronic identification: The use of electronic means to establish or verify a person’s identity. Government and commercial systems use it to identify people for remote services.
Self-sovereign identity: An identity model emphasizing an individual’s control over identifiers and credentials across services. It contrasts with platforms that centrally manage users’ identity records.
Digital credential: A digitally represented claim, qualification, or entitlement issued by an authority. Credentials provide claims about an identity, such as an account holder’s role or eligibility.
Single sign-on: An authentication arrangement that lets a user access multiple services through one login. It lets one identity provider’s authentication serve several relying services.
Know your customer: Procedures businesses use to establish customer identity and assess associated risks. Financial institutions rely on identity data to meet customer due-diligence duties.
Anonymous credential: A cryptographic credential that proves authorized claims while limiting disclosure of its holder’s identity. It shows how a service can verify eligibility without learning a full identity.
Authentication: The process of checking whether an entity controls or possesses the evidence it claims. Systems use authentication to test whether someone can act under a claimed identity.
Federated identity: An arrangement in which separate organizations accept identity assertions issued by one another. Federation allows an identity established in one system to be recognized by another.
