Knowra Digital privacy Digital privacy Digital privacy is the protection and appropriate handling of personal information generated, collected, or shared through digital systems. It concerns who can access data, how it is used, and how long it is kept.
Data minimization : A practice of collecting and retaining only the personal data needed for a specified purpose. Collecting less information reduces what can be exposed or misused.
Personal data : Information relating to an identified or identifiable person. Digital privacy protections generally concern information that can be linked to people.
Web tracking : The recording of people’s activity across websites or within digital services. Tracking links browsing behavior to profiles, devices, or accounts.
Information security : The protection of information and systems against unauthorized access, alteration, disruption, or destruction. Security protects data from threats; privacy also concerns legitimate collection and use.
Contextual integrity : A theory of privacy in which information flows are appropriate when they fit social contexts and their norms. It explains why appropriate data use depends on purpose, actors, and setting.
Encryption : The transformation of information into ciphertext that can be read only with the required key. Encryption can restrict access to personal data during storage and transmission.
Metadata : Data describing other data, such as its source, timing, format, or recipients. Metadata can reveal relationships and habits even when message contents stay private.
Cookies : Small pieces of data that websites store in a browser to retain state or recognize activity. Cookies can support sessions and preferences, but also enable tracking.
Data protection : Legal and organizational measures governing the processing of personal data. Data protection gives privacy-related duties formal rules and enforcement.
Identity theft : The fraudulent use of another person’s identifying information, often for financial or other gain. Exposed personal data can enable impersonation and financial harm.
