Dimensional metrology

Dimensional metrology is the science and practice of measuring the size, shape, and geometric features of physical objects. It connects measurement results to recognized standards through calibration and traceability.

Measurement uncertainty: A parameter describing the dispersion of values reasonably attributable to a measured quantity. It quantifies the limits of confidence in reported dimensions.
Length: A physical quantity expressing the extent of an object or separation between points. Dimensional metrology measures length and related geometric quantities.
Coordinate metrology: The measurement of geometric features using coordinates of sampled points in a defined reference system. It provides a broad framework for inspecting complex three-dimensional parts.
Caliper: A hand instrument with jaws or points for measuring internal, external, or depth dimensions. Calipers offer convenient direct readings but generally lower precision than specialized systems.
Measurement uncertainty budget: An accounting of uncertainty contributions combined to estimate uncertainty in a measurement result. It exposes which instrument, environment, or method limits dimensional confidence.
Metrological traceability: A property of a measurement result linking it to a reference through a documented, unbroken calibration chain. It links dimensional results to recognized measurement standards.
International System of Units: The internationally agreed system of measurement units, including the metre as the unit of length. It provides the unit framework for expressing dimensional results.
CMM probing: The acquisition of coordinate data from a part using contact or non-contact probes on a coordinate-measuring machine. Probe selection and strategy shape how a CMM captures a part’s geometry.
Micrometer: A precision measuring instrument that uses a screw mechanism to measure small distances. A micrometer measures selected dimensions directly rather than mapping whole geometry.
Thermal expansion: The change in a material’s dimensions as its temperature changes. Temperature differences can distort parts and standards at precision scales.
