Ether : An organic compound in which an oxygen atom is bonded to two carbon-containing groups. Dimethyl ether is the smallest member of this compound family.
Liquefied petroleum gas : A fuel mixture composed mainly of propane and butane, stored as a pressurized liquid. Dimethyl ether can substitute for or blend with this household and industrial fuel.

Methanol dehydration : A reaction that combines two methanol molecules, eliminating water to form dimethyl ether. This direct reaction is a standard commercial route to dimethyl ether.
Carbon monoxide : A colorless, odorless, toxic gas produced by incomplete combustion of carbon-containing fuels. Poorly mixed or oxygen-limited dimethyl ether combustion can still generate this pollutant.
Ethanol : A two-carbon alcohol, formula C₂H₅OH, widely used in beverages, solvents, and fuels. Ethanol is a liquid oxygenated fuel, whereas dimethyl ether is a pressurized gas.
