Dimethylamine

Dimethylamine is a secondary amine with formula (CH₃)₂NH, in which nitrogen is bonded to two methyl groups and one hydrogen atom. It is a colorless, volatile, flammable gas with a fishy odor.

Amine: An organic compound derived from ammonia by replacing one or more hydrogen atoms with carbon-containing groups. Dimethylamine belongs to this nitrogen-containing compound family.
Methyl group: A one-carbon alkyl group with formula –CH₃. Two methyl groups are attached to dimethylamine’s nitrogen.
Dimethylformamide: A polar aprotic solvent with formula HCON(CH₃)₂, widely used in chemical synthesis. Dimethylamine is used to make this industrial solvent.
Methylamine: A primary amine with formula CH₃NH₂, containing one methyl group bonded to nitrogen. It has one fewer methyl substituent than dimethylamine.
Secondary amine: An amine whose nitrogen is bonded to two carbon groups and one hydrogen atom. This classification follows directly from dimethylamine’s two methyl groups and N–H bond.
Nitrogen: A chemical element with symbol N and atomic number 7. Nitrogen is the central atom in dimethylamine’s structure.
Dimethylacetamide: A polar aprotic solvent with formula CH₃CON(CH₃)₂, used in manufacturing and synthesis. Dimethylamine supplies the nitrogen-containing group in its production.
Trimethylamine: A tertiary amine with formula (CH₃)₃N, containing three methyl groups bonded to nitrogen. It lacks dimethylamine’s N–H bond and has a different amine class.
Basicity: The tendency of a chemical species to accept a proton or donate an electron pair. The nitrogen lone pair lets dimethylamine accept a proton.
Molecular geometry: The three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule. Nitrogen’s bonded atoms and lone pair give dimethylamine a pyramidal shape.
