Diocese

A diocese is a defined territorial portion of a church entrusted to a bishop for pastoral governance. It typically includes multiple parishes and may be organized into smaller districts.

Bishop: A senior Christian cleric who leads a diocese and oversees its clergy and congregations. The bishop holds pastoral and administrative responsibility for the diocese.
Diocesan curia: The offices and officials that assist a diocesan bishop in governing a diocese. It handles administrative work that supports the bishop's governance.
Apostolic vicariate: A territorial jurisdiction governed by a vicar apostolic, usually before or instead of being established as a diocese. It serves as a distinct territorial structure where a diocese has not been erected.
Diocletian: Roman emperor from 284 to 305 who reorganized the empire's provincial administration. The church later adopted the Roman administrative term associated with dioceses.
Roman Catholic Diocese: A portion of the Catholic Church entrusted to a diocesan bishop for pastoral care. This is the Roman Catholic form of diocesan governance, generally defined by territory.
