Diogo Cão

Diogo Cão was a 15th-century Portuguese navigator who explored the west coast of Africa for the Portuguese crown and reached the mouth of the Congo River.

Portuguese Age of Discovery: A period of Portuguese maritime exploration and overseas expansion beginning in the 15th century. Cão’s African voyages formed part of Portugal’s early push down the Atlantic coast.
Congo River: A major river in central Africa that empties into the Atlantic Ocean. Cão reached its mouth and established contact with the Kingdom of Kongo.
Portuguese–Kongo relations: Diplomatic, religious, and commercial relations between Portugal and the Kingdom of Kongo from the late 15th century onward. Cão’s arrival initiated the sustained royal contacts that developed into these relations.

Afonso V of Portugal: King of Portugal from 1438 to 1481, whose reign included expansion along Africa’s Atlantic coast. Cão’s first voyages took place during the final years of Afonso V’s reign.
Padrão: A stone pillar erected by Portuguese navigators to mark exploration and assert the Portuguese crown’s claims. Cão used these markers to commemorate voyages and signal Portuguese presence along the coast.
