Dipole moment

A vector measure of the separation of positive and negative charge in a molecule or other charge distribution. Its magnitude reflects charge separation, and its direction follows a defined convention.

Electric dipole: A pair of equal and opposite charges separated by a distance, characterized by an electric dipole moment. The molecular quantity extends the electric dipole idea to distributed charges and bonded atoms.
Dielectric constant: A measure of how strongly a material reduces an electric field relative to vacuum. Permanent molecular dipoles can contribute to a material’s response to an applied field.
Quadrupole moment: A measure of the second-order spatial distribution of electric charge, relevant when lower-order moments vanish or are insufficient. A molecule with zero dipole can still have an electric quadrupole moment.
Water: A bent molecule composed of two hydrogen atoms bonded to one oxygen atom. Its polar O–H bonds combine into a nonzero molecular dipole because of its bent geometry.
Electronegativity: A measure of an atom’s tendency to attract shared electrons in a chemical bond. Electronegativity differences create polar bonds that contribute to molecular dipole moments.
Microwave spectroscopy: A spectroscopic method that probes transitions between molecular rotational energy levels using microwave radiation. A changing dipole moment allows a molecule to absorb or emit rotational radiation.
Polarizability: A measure of how readily a charge distribution is distorted by an electric field. Dipole moment describes existing charge separation; polarizability describes the response to a field.
Carbon dioxide: A linear molecule consisting of a carbon atom bonded to two oxygen atoms. Its polar C=O bond contributions cancel, leaving zero net dipole moment.
Molecular geometry: The three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in a molecule. Bond dipoles add as vectors, so geometry determines whether they reinforce or cancel.
Infrared spectroscopy: A method that identifies molecular vibrational transitions through absorption of infrared radiation. A vibration is infrared-active when it changes the molecule’s dipole moment.
