Dirac sea

The Dirac sea is a historical model in which every negative-energy electron state is occupied. It interprets a missing electron in that sea as a positron.

Negative-energy solutions: Solutions of relativistic particle equations with energy below the conventional positive-energy branch. Filling these electron states is the sea model’s central assumption.
Paul Dirac: The British theoretical physicist who formulated the relativistic electron equation and predicted the positron. He introduced the filled negative-energy-state picture to address the equation’s unwanted solutions.
Quantum field theory: A framework that treats particles and fields within quantum mechanics and special relativity. It describes antiparticles as field excitations rather than vacancies in a material sea.
Antimatter: Matter composed of antiparticles, which have charges opposite to those of corresponding particles. The sea provided an early account of how an antiparticle could arise from electron theory.
Pauli exclusion principle: The quantum rule that identical fermions cannot occupy the same quantum state. It prevents ordinary electrons from falling into already occupied negative-energy states.
Dirac equation: A relativistic quantum equation describing spin-½ particles such as electrons. Its mathematical structure set the problem the sea model was designed to resolve.
Feynman–Stueckelberg interpretation: An interpretation in which antiparticles can be represented mathematically as particles traveling backward in time. It offers a different account of antiparticle propagation than the sea’s hole picture.
Positronium: A short-lived bound state consisting of an electron and a positron. Its existence illustrates the particle–antiparticle pair that hole theory helped predict.
Positron: The electron’s positively charged antiparticle, with the same mass and spin. The model identifies a vacancy among filled electron states with this particle.
Klein paradox: A counterintuitive prediction that relativistic quantum particles can penetrate very strong potential barriers. Related difficulties with negative-energy states exposed limits of single-particle relativistic theory.
