Discobolus

Discobolus is an ancient Greek sculpture by Myron showing an athlete poised to throw a discus. Its original bronze is lost; the work is known chiefly through Roman marble copies.

Discobolus Lancellotti: A Roman marble copy of Myron’s Discobolus, now in the National Roman Museum’s Palazzo Massimo alle Terme. Its unusually complete preservation makes it the best-known surviving version.
Myron: A Greek sculptor of the fifth century BCE, renowned in antiquity for bronze statues of athletes and mythological figures. Ancient writers attribute the Discobolus to him.
Contrapposto: A sculptural stance in which weight rests mainly on one leg, producing asymmetry in the hips and shoulders. The Discobolus uses bodily counterbalance to keep its twisting pose coherent.
