Discourse

Discourse is structured language use shaped by social conventions, institutions, and power. It organizes how subjects are discussed and what can count as knowledge.

Michel Foucault: French philosopher and historian whose work examined power, knowledge, institutions, and systems of thought. His account of discourse explains how historically specific rules govern what can be said as knowledge.
Émile Benveniste: French linguist whose work on enunciation distinguished language as a system from language in use. His account of enunciation helped establish discourse as language situated in a speaking act.
Critical discourse analysis: An interdisciplinary approach that examines how language reproduces or challenges social power and inequality. It makes the power relations embedded in public and institutional discourse a central object of analysis.
Medicalization: The process by which conditions or behaviors come to be defined and treated as medical problems. Medical discourse can recast social or personal differences as diagnoses requiring expert intervention.
Language: A socially shared system of signs and rules used to communicate and represent meaning. Language is the broader system; discourse concerns its patterned use under social and historical conditions.
Power-knowledge: Foucault’s idea that power and knowledge shape and reinforce one another rather than operating independently. It describes how discursive authority depends on institutions and also strengthens them.
Zellig Harris: American linguist who developed distributional methods and introduced the term discourse analysis in a 1952 article. His linguistic approach gave discourse analysis an early, systematic research program.
Social constructionism: An approach that studies how shared meanings and categories are produced through social interaction and institutions. It explains how discursive practices help make social categories seem natural or stable.
Orientalism: Edward Said’s analysis of Western representations of the East as a knowable, contrasting, and subordinate object. It shows how scholarly and cultural discourse can help produce the people and regions it claims to describe.
Text linguistics: The study of how texts achieve coherence and cohesion beyond the level of individual sentences. Text linguistics emphasizes textual structure, whereas discourse also includes social practices and institutional power.
