Dissolution of the Monasteries

The confiscation and closure of England’s monasteries under Henry VIII, chiefly between 1536 and 1540. Their lands and wealth passed to the Crown and, through sales and grants, to new owners.

Valor Ecclesiasticus: A 1535 survey of the income and property of England’s ecclesiastical institutions. Its valuations helped determine which smaller monasteries faced suppression in 1536.
