Distributive Justice

Distributive justice concerns how benefits, burdens, rights, and opportunities are allocated among people. Its central question is which principles make those allocations fair.

Equality: The state or principle of treating people as equal in status, rights, or shares. Equal shares are one direct answer to how benefits and burdens should be distributed.
John Rawls: An American political philosopher whose theory of justice centers on equal basic liberties and fair social cooperation. Rawls gives distributive justice a leading institutional account through principles chosen behind a veil of ignorance.
Libertarianism: A political philosophy that gives strong priority to individual liberty, property rights, and voluntary exchange. Libertarian theories challenge patterned distributions when they arise through just acquisition and transfer.
Taxation: The compulsory levying of money by public authorities to fund government and public services. Tax rules determine how economic burdens and public resources are shared across society.
Economic inequality: Unequal distribution of income, wealth, or other economic resources among people or groups. It is a central outcome that distributive principles evaluate and institutions can reinforce or reduce.
Equity: Fair treatment that accounts for relevant differences in people’s circumstances or needs. Equity asks whether identical shares remain fair when people face unequal needs or starting points.
Difference principle: Rawls’s principle permitting social and economic inequalities only when they benefit the least advantaged. It specifies when unequal distributions can count as just within Rawls’s theory.
Utilitarianism: The ethical theory that evaluates actions or institutions by their contribution to overall well-being. Utilitarian allocation can favor total welfare even when gains and losses are distributed unequally.
Progressive taxation: A tax system in which the rate rises as the taxable amount increases. It is a practical way to make higher-income groups contribute a larger share.
Social mobility: Movement of individuals or groups between positions in a society’s economic or social hierarchy. Unequal access to education, wealth, and opportunity can constrain movement between social positions.
