Divination

Divination is the practice of seeking hidden knowledge or guidance through supernatural or ritual means, often to understand future events or uncertain circumstances.

Oracle: A person, place, or institution believed to deliver divine or supernatural answers. Oracles provide answers through an authorized channel rather than interpreting every sign independently.
Mesopotamian divination: The ancient Mesopotamian practices of interpreting omens, dreams, celestial events, and other signs. Mesopotamian scholarship made systematic omen interpretation a state-supported discipline.
Pythia: The priestess of Apollo at Delphi who delivered the sanctuary’s prophetic responses. Her role illustrates how an oracle’s authority could be embodied in a ritual specialist.

Greek oracles: Sanctuaries in ancient Greece where people sought divine responses through priestly or inspired intermediaries. Greek oracles became prominent institutions for consulting divine guidance.
haruspex: A specialist in ancient Rome who interpreted sacrificial entrails and other ritual signs. Haruspices supplied expert readings of signs for Roman leaders.
Probability: A mathematical framework for quantifying uncertainty about possible outcomes. Probability models uncertainty without treating outcomes as messages or omens.
Omen: An event or sign interpreted as an indication of a future occurrence or divine intent. Omens show how ordinary or unusual events can acquire predictive meaning.
