Divine Liturgy

The principal Eucharistic service in Byzantine Christian traditions, centered on scripture, prayers, and the consecration and reception of bread and wine.

Prothesis: The preparation of bread and wine for the Eucharist before the public portion of the Byzantine liturgy. This preparatory rite readies the gifts that are later brought to the altar.
Eucharist: The Christian sacrament in which bread and wine are consecrated and shared in remembrance of Christ. The Divine Liturgy is the Byzantine form of the Eucharistic celebration.
