Divine providence

Divine providence is the theological idea that God guides, sustains, or governs events in the world. It concerns how divine action relates to creation, human freedom, and suffering.

Divine concurrence: The theological view that God sustains created causes while they produce their effects. It explains how divine action can accompany ordinary causes without replacing them.
Theism: Belief in the existence of at least one God. Providence is a claim made within theistic accounts of the world.
The problem of evil: The challenge of reconciling evil and suffering with an all-powerful, all-knowing, perfectly good God. Apparently pointless suffering raises questions about the goodness of providential governance.
Augustine of Hippo: A late-antique Christian theologian whose writings shaped Western doctrines of grace, sin, and divine governance. Augustine developed influential accounts of God’s ordering of history and human affairs.
Theological determinism: The view that everything that occurs is determined by God’s will or decree. It draws a strong implication from the claim that God governs every event.
Secondary cause: A created agent or process that produces effects under the ultimate causal power of God. Providence is often described as governing events through created causes.
Creation: The act or process by which God brings the universe into existence. Providence extends divine relation to the world beyond its initial creation.
Theodicy: An attempt to explain how God’s goodness and power can coexist with evil. Theodicies defend or reinterpret providence in response to suffering.
Thomas Aquinas: A medieval theologian and philosopher who integrated Christian doctrine with Aristotelian thought. Aquinas treated providence as God’s ordering of all things toward their ends.
Chance: The apparent occurrence of events without predictable pattern or intentional direction. Providence challenges whether events that seem accidental are ultimately ungoverned.
