Division of labor

Division of labor separates production into specialized tasks performed by different people or groups. It can increase output by improving skill, reducing task-switching, and enabling coordinated work.

Specialization: The concentration of work or knowledge on a narrower range of tasks. Workers develop greater proficiency when production assigns them narrower, repeated tasks.
Adam Smith: An eighteenth-century Scottish economist and philosopher who analyzed markets, labor, and economic growth. His account of the pin factory made task specialization a landmark explanation of productivity.
Assembly line: A production system in which a product moves through a sequence of specialized workstations. It organizes industrial work as a fixed sequence of divided tasks.
Productivity: The amount of output produced per unit of labor, capital, or other input. Higher output per worker is the central economic benefit attributed to task division.
Comparative advantage: The ability to produce a good at lower opportunity cost than another producer. It explains how specialization can benefit parties even when one is more productive at every task.
Task allocation: The assignment of tasks among people, roles, or organizations. Output depends on matching tasks to workers and arranging their contributions.
The Wealth of Nations: Adam Smith’s 1776 book on political economy, markets, and the sources of national prosperity. Its opening chapter presents division of labor as a source of increased productive power.
Scientific management: A management approach that analyzes work scientifically to improve efficiency and control. It applies task division by separating planning from execution and standardizing operations.
Alienation: A condition in which people experience their work or its products as separate from their control or identity. Fragmented tasks can distance workers from the finished product and the meaning of their work.
Job rotation: A work practice in which employees move periodically among different tasks or roles. It counters repetitive specialization by broadening experience and varying assigned work.
