Divisionism

Divisionism is a painting method that places distinct strokes or dots of separate colors side by side, relying on optical blending rather than premixing them.

Optical mixing: The perceptual blending of adjacent colors that remain physically separate on a surface. Divisionism depends on nearby color marks blending perceptually at viewing distance.
Impressionism: A nineteenth-century art movement that emphasized transient effects of light and modern life. Divisionism developed from Impressionist attention to color and changing light.
Paul Signac: A French painter and writer who promoted Neo-Impressionism and systematic color separation. Signac defended and disseminated Divisionist technique through paintings and writing.
A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte: Georges Seurat’s large Neo-Impressionist painting of people relaxing beside the Seine. Its carefully ordered dots became the canonical demonstration of Divisionist painting.
Neo-Impressionism: A late nineteenth-century art movement that applied systematic color and brushwork to Impressionist aims. Divisionism was a central technique within this broader movement.
Simultaneous contrast: The way a color’s appearance shifts in response to neighboring colors. Separated hues can intensify or alter one another through their immediate surroundings.
Michel Eugène Chevreul: A French chemist whose studies of color contrast influenced nineteenth-century artists. His observations gave painters a scientific vocabulary for adjacent-color effects.
Henri-Edmond Cross: A French painter whose bright, separated marks helped shape later Fauvism. Cross adapted Divisionist color into increasingly broad and vivid strokes.
The Seine at La Grande Jatte: A series of paintings by Georges Seurat depicting the Seine near the island of La Grande Jatte. Seurat used repeated landscapes to test separated color under changing light.
Pointillism: A painting technique that builds images from small, discrete dots of color. Pointillism names a specific dot-based approach; Divisionism can also use short strokes.
