Dniester

The Dniester is a major Eastern European river rising in the Ukrainian Carpathians and flowing through Moldova and Ukraine into the Black Sea.

Ukrainian Carpathians: A mountain range in western Ukraine forming part of the eastern Carpathians. The Dniester rises on these mountains’ northern slopes.
Dniester Hydroelectric Power Plant: A hydroelectric facility on the Dniester in southwestern Ukraine. Its dams regulate flow and generate electricity along the river.
Ancient Greek colonization of the Black Sea: The establishment of Greek settlements around the Black Sea from the eighth century BCE onward. Greek writers knew the Dniester as the Tyras, linking it to coastal trade.
Dniester Hydropower Complex: A system of dams and power stations built along the Dniester in Ukraine. It supplies electricity while altering downstream flow and habitats.
Transnistria conflict: A political and military conflict rooted in Transnistria’s breakaway from Moldova after the Soviet Union’s collapse. The Dniester became a visible geographic divide in the conflict.

Tyras: An ancient Greek city near the mouth of the Dniester, at the site of modern Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi. The city took its name from an ancient Greek name for the river.
Dniester River Basin Treaty: A 2012 agreement between Moldova and Ukraine on cooperation to protect and sustainably use the Dniester basin. It provides a framework for managing water shared by both countries.
Dniester River pollution: Contamination of Dniester waters by municipal, industrial, and agricultural sources. Pollution travels downstream across national borders and threatens drinking-water supplies.
