Dobruja

Dobruja is a historical region between the lower Danube and the Black Sea, now divided between southeastern Romania and northeastern Bulgaria. Its strategic position has shaped centuries of migration, trade, and conflict.

Treaty of Berlin (1878): The 1878 treaty revised Europe’s borders after the Russo-Turkish War and recognized Romanian independence. Its settlement transferred Northern Dobruja to Romania and Southern Dobruja to Bulgaria.
Lipovans: Lipovans are Russian-speaking Old Believers who settled in parts of the Danube Delta and Dobruja. Their communities add a distinctive migration history to the region’s northern edge.
