Docetism

Docetism is the belief that Christ’s physical body, humanity, or suffering was apparent rather than fully real. It challenged the Christian claim that the divine Word truly became human.

Incarnation: The Christian belief that the divine Word became truly human in Jesus Christ. Docetism denies the full bodily reality central to this doctrine.
Ignatius of Antioch: An early second-century bishop and Christian writer who died while traveling to Rome for execution. His letters repeatedly affirm that Jesus was truly born, suffered, and rose bodily.
Apollinarianism: A fourth-century Christological teaching that held the divine Logos took the place of Christ’s human rational mind. Unlike Docetism, it affirmed a real body while denying a complete human nature.
Christology: The branch of Christian theology concerned with the identity and nature of Jesus Christ. Docetism is one early answer to Christological questions about divinity and humanity.
Gnostic docetism: Forms of Docetism that connect Christ’s apparent embodiment with Gnostic accounts of spirit and matter. It shows how some systems made apparent embodiment follow from a distrust of matter.
Irenaeus of Lyons: A second-century Christian bishop and theologian known for opposing movements he classified as heretical. His writings preserve early descriptions of teachings later grouped under Docetism.
Monophysitism: A Christological position that emphasizes one nature in Christ after the union of divinity and humanity. It concerns the relation of Christ’s natures, not whether his body or suffering was real.
New Testament apocrypha: Early Christian writings about Jesus and the apostles that were not included in the New Testament canon. Some apocryphal narratives portray Christ’s body in ways later readers describe as docetic.
Valentinianism: A second-century Christian movement associated with Valentinus, featuring elaborate accounts of divine emanations and salvation. Some Valentinian teachings treated Christ’s earthly body as nonordinary or apparent.
First Council of Nicaea: A council of Christian bishops convened at Nicaea in 325 to address disputes about Christ and church unity. Its creed affirmed the Word’s incarnation, though Docetism was not its central controversy.
