Doctor of Philosophy

A doctoral degree awarded for original research, typically requiring a dissertation. Despite its name, it is granted across many academic fields, not only philosophy.

Doctorate: The highest academic degree awarded by universities, usually after advanced study or original research. The PhD is one kind of doctorate, alongside professional and other research degrees.
Doctor of Medicine: A professional degree that qualifies graduates for medical practice, subject to licensing requirements. It is a doctorate centered on clinical preparation rather than original research as its defining purpose.
