Doctor's visit
A consultation in which a physician evaluates a patient's health and may provide advice, diagnosis, treatment, or follow-up care.
Medical history: A record of a person's past and current health conditions, treatments, and relevant family history. The physician uses this account to interpret symptoms and assess risks.
Patient: A person receiving medical evaluation, advice, or treatment. The patient's goals, experiences, and choices shape the consultation.
Annual physical examination: A routine health appointment focused on preventive care and review of a person's health. It is a common planned visit that may include screening and vaccination review.
Emergency department: A hospital department that evaluates and treats acute illness and injury, including life-threatening emergencies. It provides emergency evaluation when a routine physician appointment is not appropriate.
Physical examination: A systematic assessment of the body using observation, touch, listening, and simple clinical maneuvers. Findings can reveal signs that a patient's account alone cannot establish.
Physician: A healthcare professional licensed to diagnose illness and provide medical treatment. The physician brings clinical expertise and responsibility for the encounter.
Preventive healthcare: Healthcare intended to prevent disease or detect it early, rather than treat established illness alone. Routine consultations can identify risks and arrange recommended screening.
Nurse practitioner: An advanced practice nurse trained to assess patients, diagnose conditions, and provide treatment within authorized scope. A patient may receive a similar outpatient consultation from this clinician rather than a physician.
Differential diagnosis: A ranked set of possible explanations for a patient's signs and symptoms. The physician compares plausible causes before settling on a diagnosis or further tests.
Doctor–patient relationship: The professional relationship between a physician and a patient, grounded in care, communication, and trust. Trust and clear communication make it easier to share sensitive information.
