Doctrine of signatures

The doctrine of signatures is a historical belief that a plant’s appearance reveals which body part or ailment it can treat.

Paracelsus: A sixteenth-century physician and alchemist who challenged classical medicine and promoted new ideas about remedies. His writings helped popularize the idea that plants bear signs of their medicinal uses.
Analogy: A comparison that identifies relevant similarities between two otherwise distinct things. The doctrine inferred a therapeutic link from resemblance between a plant and a body part.
Walnut: The edible seed of a walnut tree, enclosed in a wrinkled shell and divided into lobed halves. Its brainlike kernel was taken as a sign that it could treat ailments of the head.
Evidence-based medicine: Clinical decision-making that integrates research evidence, medical expertise, and patient circumstances. It judges treatments by evidence of outcomes rather than visual resemblance.
Jakob Böhme: A German Christian mystic whose writings described correspondences between visible forms and spiritual qualities. His account of nature’s signatures gave the doctrine a mystical framework.
Natural theology: The study of knowledge about God derived from nature and human reason rather than revelation. Signatures were interpreted as signs placed in nature by divine design.
Lungwort: A genus of flowering plants whose spotted leaves were historically associated with diseased lungs. Its leaves were interpreted as a visual signature of lung tissue.
Randomized controlled trial: A study that randomly assigns participants to treatment or comparison groups to estimate causal effects. Random assignment tests a remedy without relying on signatures as proof.
William Coles: A seventeenth-century English botanist and physician who wrote about plants and their medicinal properties. His herbal defended the belief that plant forms disclose their healing purposes.
Symbolism: The use of objects, images, or actions to represent meanings beyond their literal presence. A plant’s visible traits functioned as symbols of its supposed medicinal target.
