Documentary ethics

Documentary ethics concerns the responsibilities of nonfiction filmmakers toward participants, subjects, audiences, and people represented in a film. It centers on consent, truthful representation, privacy, and the consequences of filming and distribution.

Informed consent: Agreement to participate given with understanding of relevant risks, purposes, and conditions. Documentary consent is meaningful only when participants understand how filming and distribution may affect them.
Participant observation: A research method in which an observer takes part in the activities of a group being studied. Sustained access creates intimacy but can blur the filmmaker's role and obligations.
Titicut Follies: Frederick Wiseman's 1967 documentary about conditions at Bridgewater State Hospital for the criminally insane. Its filming of vulnerable patients prompted a landmark dispute over privacy and public interest.
Public interest: A benefit or concern affecting the public that can justify scrutiny or disclosure. A public-interest claim may support filming or publication despite an individual's privacy concerns.
Defamation: A false statement presented as fact that harms a person's reputation and meets the legal requirements for liability. Unverified allegations in a documentary can create serious reputational and legal harm.
Documentary truth: The relationship between nonfiction films and the events, evidence, and interpretations they present. Ethical representation depends on what a film claims to show and how it constructs those claims.
Documentary editing: The selection and arrangement of nonfiction footage into a film's structure and meaning. Editing can alter context, imply causation, or make a participant appear to say something they did not.
The Thin Blue Line: Errol Morris's 1988 documentary investigating the murder conviction of Randall Dale Adams. Its reenactments and investigative claims show how form can shape judgments about evidence.
Deontology: An ethical framework that evaluates actions by duties and rules rather than outcomes alone. Duties such as respecting consent can constrain filmmaking even when exposure might produce benefits.
Trauma-informed care: An approach that recognizes trauma's effects and seeks to avoid retraumatization while providing support. Sensitive interviewing and filming can reduce avoidable harm to people recounting traumatic experiences.
