Domain name

A domain name is a human-readable name for a domain in the Domain Name System (DNS). It can identify internet services through DNS records, which associate the name with information such as IP addresses.

Domain Name System: The hierarchical naming system that stores and retrieves information about internet domains. It resolves domain names by following a distributed hierarchy of DNS servers.
Top-level domain: The rightmost component of a DNS name, such as .com or .org. It is the highest-level suffix in names such as example.com.
Uniform Resource Locator: A string that identifies a resource and describes how to access it, often using a scheme and host name. A domain name commonly appears as the host in a web address.
IP address: A numerical identifier assigned to a device or network interface for communication using Internet Protocol. Unlike a domain name, it is a numerical network identifier, though DNS can associate the two.
Domain name registrar: An organization authorized to register domain names through a top-level domain’s registry. Registrars provide the route through which many domain names are registered and managed.
DNS record: A structured entry in DNS that associates a domain name with data such as an IP address or mail server. Records determine what services a domain name points to and how they are handled.
Second-level domain: The label immediately to the left of a top-level domain in a DNS name. In example.com, example is the second-level domain registered under .com.
Email address: An address that identifies a recipient for electronic mail, typically in the form local-part@domain. The domain portion directs mail delivery through DNS mail records.
Hostname: A name assigned to a computer or other host on a network. A hostname can be a DNS name, but the terms describe different roles and contexts.
Domain name registry: An organization that maintains registration data for a top-level domain. Registries maintain the authoritative registration database behind domain names in their extensions.
