Don River

The Don is a major river in southwestern Russia that flows into the Sea of Azov. Its basin links the Central Russian Upland, the Volga region, and the Azov coast.

Sea of Azov: A shallow sea connected to the Black Sea through the Kerch Strait and bordered by Russia and Ukraine. The Don empties into this sea, forming its principal river outlet.
Don River delta: A low, branching wetland where the Don divides into channels before entering the Sea of Azov. The delta is the river’s final landscape, where sediment and freshwater reach the sea.
Tanais: An ancient Greek city and trading colony near the mouth of the Don, founded in the seventh century BCE. Tanais grew where the Don connected inland routes with Black Sea commerce.
Don River shipping: The transport of cargo and passengers by vessel along the Don and its connected waterways. The navigable lower river carries traffic between inland Russia and the Sea of Azov.
Eutrophication: The enrichment of water with nutrients, often causing excessive algal growth and reduced oxygen. Nutrient runoff in the Don basin contributes to ecological stress downstream.
Volga–Don Canal: A navigable canal in southwestern Russia connecting the Don and Volga river systems. This canal links the Don to the Volga and creates a route between the Caspian and Azov seas.
Tsimlyansk Dam: A dam on the Don that impounds the Tsimlyansk Reservoir and supports hydropower and water management. Its impoundment transforms the Don’s flow and creates the largest reservoir on the river.
Cimmerian Bosporus: The ancient name for the Kerch Strait, connecting the Sea of Azov with the Black Sea. The Don’s mouth opened onto this maritime passage through the Azov basin.
Volga–Don Shipping Canal: The navigable waterway connecting the Volga and Don through the Volga–Don Canal and its locks. This route extends Don shipping across two major river basins.
Sea of Azov environmental issues: Ecological pressures on the Sea of Azov, including pollution, altered freshwater inflow, and declining fish stocks. Changes in the Don’s flow and water quality affect the sea it feeds.
