Donation of Pepin

The Donation of Pepin was an eighth-century grant of territory in central Italy by the Frankish king Pepin the Short to the papacy, forming the territorial basis of the Papal States.

Pepin the Short: King of the Franks from 751 to 768 and father of Charlemagne. He made the grants that transferred former Byzantine territory to the papacy.
Siege of Pavia (756): The Frankish siege that forced Lombard king Aistulf to accept terms in 756. Its outcome enabled Pepin to enforce a territorial settlement in central Italy.
Papal temporal power: The pope’s authority to govern territories and exercise secular political power. The grant gave the papacy a substantial territorial basis for secular government.
