Knowra Donbas Donbas The Donbas is an industrial coal-mining region centered in eastern Ukraine and extending into southwestern Russia. Its coalfields and heavy industry shaped the region’s economy, settlement, and political history.
Donets Basin : A geological coal basin in eastern Ukraine and southwestern Russia, forming the physical basis of the Donbas. Its Carboniferous coal seams gave the region its name and industrial foundation.
Donbas coal industry : The network of mines, processing facilities, and businesses extracting and supplying coal from the Donbas. It supplied fuel to regional factories and power stations and shaped employment.
Donetsk : A major industrial city in eastern Ukraine, founded as Yuzivka and later known as Stalino. The region’s largest city became a center of coal, steel, and political power.
Soviet industrialization : The rapid expansion of heavy industry, collectivized agriculture, and state-directed production in the Soviet Union. Soviet policies expanded Donbas mines and factories while reshaping its population.
Donetsk Oblast : An administrative region of Ukraine centered on Donetsk, whose territory includes much of the Ukrainian Donbas. Its formal boundary does not match every geographic or political use of “Donbas.”
Coal mining : The extraction of coal from underground or surface deposits for energy and industrial use. Mining drove the Donbas’s growth and defined its major settlements.
Donbas–Kryvyi Rih economic region : An industrial system linking Donbas coal and steelmaking with iron ore from the Kryvyi Rih region. Coal and ore connected the Donbas to Ukraine’s wider metallurgical economy.
Luhansk : An industrial city in eastern Ukraine with a history of metallurgy and machine building. It is a second major urban center within the Ukrainian Donbas.
Holodomor : The catastrophic famine in Soviet Ukraine in 1932–1933, caused by coercive state policies and grain requisitions. The famine also affected Donbas communities during the region’s rapid Soviet transformation.
Luhansk Oblast : An administrative region in eastern Ukraine that contains a large part of the Ukrainian Donbas. It is often grouped with Donetsk Oblast as the Donbas, though the terms are not identical.
