Knowra Dong Zhongshu Dong Zhongshu Dong Zhongshu was a Han dynasty philosopher and court official who connected Confucian ethics to correlative cosmology and the moral responsibilities of imperial rule.
Confucianism : A Chinese ethical and philosophical tradition centered on moral cultivation, social relationships, ritual, and humane government. Dong Zhongshu recast Confucian teachings as principles for governing the Han empire.
Correspondence theory : The idea that entities in different domains share patterned relationships and can influence one another. Dong Zhongshu connected human government, natural events, and cosmic forces through patterned correspondences.
Western Han dynasty : The first major period of the Han dynasty, ruling China from 202 BCE to 9 CE. Dong Zhongshu developed his career amid the Western Han court’s search for political unity.
State Confucianism : The institutional use of Confucian teachings to frame government, education, and political authority. His thought became a prominent model for aligning Confucian ethics with imperial governance.
Spring and Autumn Annals : A terse chronicle of the state of Lu traditionally associated with Confucius. Dong Zhongshu treated its wording as a source of political judgments and moral teachings.
Mandate of Heaven : The doctrine that Heaven grants a ruler authority conditional on virtuous governance and may withdraw it. His moralized account of imperial authority made rule answerable to Heaven.
Emperor Wu of Han : The Han emperor who ruled from 141 to 87 BCE and expanded imperial power and territory. Dong Zhongshu’s proposals are associated with the court of Emperor Wu.
Imperial examination : A system of examinations used in imperial China to select officials, especially through mastery of classical texts. The later centrality of Confucian classics in official culture extended the intellectual direction he helped advance.
Five Phases : A Chinese system relating wood, fire, earth, metal, and water through cycles of generation and conquest. He used phase correspondences to connect dynastic rule with patterns in nature.
Heaven-human resonance : The theory that human actions and cosmic events respond to and affect one another. It explains how an emperor’s conduct could be reflected in natural signs.
