Door (architecture)

A movable barrier fitted to an opening in a wall or enclosure, used to control passage, provide privacy, and separate spaces.

Door leaf: The movable panel of a door that opens or closes an entrance. It forms the barrier that swings, slides, or pivots across the opening.
Mortise lock: A lock housed in a rectangular cavity cut into the edge of a door. It integrates the locking mechanism within the door leaf.
Sliding door: A door that opens by moving horizontally along a track. It avoids the swing arc needed by a conventional hinged door.
Gate: A movable barrier controlling passage through a fence, wall, or boundary. Unlike most doors, it commonly closes an outdoor boundary rather than an interior opening.
Door frame: The fixed structure surrounding a doorway that supports the door and its hardware. It anchors the movable leaf and transfers its loads to the wall.
Latch: A fastening device that holds a door closed until released. It keeps the leaf against the frame without necessarily locking it.
Revolving door: A door with panels that rotate around a central vertical axis within a circular enclosure. It allows continuous two-way passage while limiting drafts between indoors and outdoors.
Window: An opening in a building envelope, usually fitted with glazing to admit light and views. It shares the framed opening but is generally designed for light rather than passage.
Hinge: A joint that connects two parts and permits rotation around an axis. It lets a hinged door leaf rotate relative to its frame.
Deadbolt: A lock bolt that moves into a strike without spring action. It resists forced entry more strongly than a spring latch.
