Dortmund–Ems Canal

The Dortmund–Ems Canal is a German ship canal connecting Dortmund with the Ems River near Emden. Opened in 1899, it linked the Ruhr industrial region to North Sea shipping.

Ship lock: A water chamber with gates that raises or lowers vessels between waterways at different levels. Locks let vessels pass between canal reaches at different heights along the route.
Prussian canal policy: The Prussian state’s policies for planning, financing, and building navigable waterways. State support helped turn the proposed route into a major public infrastructure project.
Inland waterway transport: The movement of passengers or freight on rivers, canals, and other navigable inland waters. The canal is a freight corridor within Germany’s inland navigation system.

Datteln-Hamm Canal: A German ship canal connecting the Dortmund–Ems Canal at Datteln with Hamm. Its junction at Datteln extends the canal network eastward toward Hamm.
Ruhr coal mining: The extraction of coal from the Ruhr region, a major driver of German industrialization. Coal shipments were a central commercial reason for building the canal.
Port of Dortmund: An inland port in Dortmund at the southern end of the Dortmund–Ems Canal. The port handles cargo brought by canal and connects it with rail and road networks.
German canal network: The connected system of navigable canals and rivers used for transport in Germany. The Dortmund–Ems Canal became one link in a wider national waterway system.
Ems River: A river in northwestern Germany and the Netherlands that flows into the North Sea. The canal reaches the Ems near Emden, linking its inland course to a natural waterway.
