Double act

A double act is a performance partnership in which two performers create an act through contrasting roles, coordinated timing, and interaction.

Straight man: A performer who provides a restrained setup or reaction that highlights another performer’s comic behavior. The straight role gives the contrasting partner’s antics a clear target and frame.
Laurel and Hardy: A comedy duo of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, known for films built around their mismatched characters. Their gentle schemer and pompous blunderer became a defining screen double act.
Music hall: A popular British theatrical entertainment featuring songs, comedy, and variety acts. Music hall provided stages and conventions in which comic partnerships could develop.
Solo performance: A performance delivered by one principal performer without a co-performer sharing the act. A solo act lacks the reciprocal contrast that defines a double act.
