Double stop

A string-instrument technique in which two notes sound simultaneously, usually by bowing or plucking two strings at once.

Bowing: The technique of drawing a bow across strings to produce sound. On bowed instruments, the bow contacts two strings to sustain both notes.
Musical interval: The pitch distance between two notes. Each double stop produces an interval whose sound depends on its pitch distance.
Bach's Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin: A set of six solo violin works by Johann Sebastian Bach, including fugues and dance movements. Their layered counterpoint often relies on simultaneous notes from one instrument.
