Download

A download is the transfer of data from a remote system to a local device, or the data received through that transfer.

Client–server model: A computing architecture in which clients request services or resources from servers. Downloads commonly begin when a client requests a file or other resource from a server.
Web browser: Software that retrieves and displays web resources for users. Browsers save linked files and resources to local storage.
Upload: The transfer of data from a local device to a remote system. Upload reverses the usual direction of a download.
Computer network: A set of connected computing devices that exchange data and share resources. A download requires a path between the remote system and local device.
Hypertext Transfer Protocol: An application-layer protocol used to transfer web resources between clients and servers. Browsers use HTTP or HTTPS to request many downloads from websites.
Package manager: Software that installs, updates, and removes software packages, often from online repositories. Package managers download software and its dependencies before installation.
Peer-to-peer file sharing: A method of sharing files directly among networked participants rather than relying solely on a central server. A download can come from peers as well as a single remote server.
Internet Protocol: The network-layer protocol that addresses and routes packets across interconnected networks. IP carries the packets that transport download data across networks.
Transmission Control Protocol: A transport protocol that provides ordered, reliable byte streams between networked applications. TCP can retransmit lost data so a transfer arrives in order.
Streaming media: Audio or video delivered continuously for playback as data arrives. Streaming plays content during delivery, unlike a completed-file download.
