Dresser Formation

The Dresser Formation is a roughly 3.5-billion-year-old geological unit in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, preserving ancient volcanic rocks, hydrothermal deposits, and possible traces of early life.

Stromatolite: A layered sedimentary structure commonly formed as microbial communities trap or precipitate minerals. Layered structures in the formation have been interpreted as possible evidence of microbial communities.
Volcanic arc: A chain of volcanoes formed above a subducting tectonic plate. Arc volcanism is one model for the tectonic setting in which the formation accumulated.
Pilbara Craton: An ancient, relatively stable block of continental crust in Western Australia. The Dresser Formation is part of the Pilbara Craton’s exceptionally old geological record.
Archean life: Life that existed during the Archean Eon, more than 2.5 billion years ago. The formation is a key setting for investigating how early life appeared and persisted.
Hydrothermal vent: A seafloor opening that releases heated, mineral-rich fluids from Earth’s crust. The formation preserves deposits associated with ancient seafloor hydrothermal activity.
Hydrothermal alteration: Chemical and mineralogical change caused when hot fluids react with rock. Hot fluids altered volcanic rocks and formed mineral deposits within the formation.
Warrawoona Group: An Archean geological group in the Pilbara containing some of Earth’s oldest well-preserved volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The Dresser Formation is commonly assigned to this regional stratigraphic group.
Biosignature: A feature or chemical pattern that may provide evidence of past or present life. Proposed biological textures and chemical signals must be distinguished from abiotic lookalikes.
Barite: A sulfate mineral composed of barium and sulfate ions. Barite deposits in the formation preserve clues to ancient fluids and seawater chemistry.
Silicification: The replacement or infilling of rock by silica minerals. Silica-rich fluids helped preserve fine structures and chemical signals in the rocks.
