Drifting

Drifting is a motorsport technique in which a driver deliberately oversteers through a turn while maintaining control. The car travels at an angle to its direction of motion.

Oversteer: A vehicle-handling condition in which the rear tires lose grip before the front tires, causing the car to rotate more sharply. Drifting deliberately uses rear-tire grip loss to rotate the car through a turn.
Formula Drift: A professional drifting championship series founded in the United States in 2004. It is a prominent competition in which drivers are judged on controlled drifting.
Kunimitsu Takahashi: A Japanese racing driver and motorcycle champion who competed in international motorsport from the 1960s onward. His high-speed cornering style is widely associated with early Japanese drifting.
Grip driving: A driving approach that prioritizes keeping tires within their available traction during cornering. Unlike drifting, grip driving aims to minimize sideways tire slip through a turn.
Countersteering: Steering opposite the direction of a vehicle's turn to manage a slide or correct a skid. Drivers countersteer to control the car while its rear tires slide outward.
Drifting competition: A motorsport event in which drivers perform judged slides, often in tandem against an opponent. Competition turns individual car control into a scored and head-to-head performance.
Keiichi Tsuchiya: A Japanese racing driver known for popularizing drifting through demonstrations, videos, and competition. His public demonstrations helped bring drifting from roads and circuits into wider view.
Power sliding: A vehicle maneuver in which engine power causes the driven wheels to lose traction and the car to slide. Power sliding can initiate a drift, but it does not by itself describe every drifting technique.
Weight transfer: The redistribution of a vehicle's load among its tires as acceleration, braking, or cornering changes. Shifting load between tires changes their grip and helps initiate or regulate a drift.
Tandem drifting: A drifting format in which two cars slide through the same course in close formation. Judged battles test whether a chasing driver can follow a lead car's line and proximity.
