Drug Enforcement Administration

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is a United States Department of Justice agency that enforces federal controlled-substance laws and investigates drug trafficking.

Controlled Substances Act: A 1970 United States law that regulates controlled drugs through schedules and establishes federal controls on their manufacture, distribution, and possession. This statute supplies the central federal rules the DEA enforces.
Federal Bureau of Narcotics: A United States Treasury Department agency, established in 1930, that enforced federal narcotics laws before its functions passed to successor agencies. The DEA inherited much of the federal narcotics-enforcement role previously held by this bureau.
