Drukpa Kagyu

Drukpa Kagyu is a major school of Tibetan Buddhism in the Kagyu tradition, founded in the 12th century by Tsangpa Gyare Yeshe Dorje. It is especially influential in Bhutan and the Himalayan regions.

Tsangpa Gyare Yeshe Dorje: A Tibetan Buddhist master who founded the Drukpa Kagyu school in the 12th century. He established the lineage and gave it the name Drukpa.
Mahamudra: A Buddhist meditation tradition that investigates the nature of mind through direct experience. Drukpa Kagyu transmits Mahamudra as a central contemplative teaching.
Gyalwang Drukpa: The title of the successive heads of the Drukpa Kagyu school. The lineage’s leaders have guided its institutions and teachings across generations.
Drukpa Kunley: A 15th-century Drukpa Kagyu yogi remembered in Bhutan for unconventional teaching and religious poetry. His stories show how Drukpa teachings took distinctive popular forms in Bhutan.
Karma Kagyu: A major Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism headed by the Karmapas. It is a distinct Kagyu branch with a separate succession and institutional history.
Lingrepa Pema Dorje: A Tibetan Buddhist yogi and teacher who was Tsangpa Gyare’s principal master. His instruction transmitted the Kagyu teachings that Tsangpa Gyare developed.
Six Dharmas of Naropa: A set of advanced Tibetan Buddhist meditation practices associated with the Indian master Naropa. These practices form a major part of the school’s Kagyu meditation inheritance.
Pema Karpo: A 16th-century Drukpa Kagyu scholar and teacher who wrote extensively on Buddhist philosophy and practice. His scholarship became a major source for the school’s doctrinal tradition.
Drukpa Kagyu in Bhutan: The dominant Buddhist tradition in Bhutan, established through Drukpa Kagyu institutions and teachings. Bhutan is the school’s most prominent national center.
Drikung Kagyu: A Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism founded by Jigten Sumgön in the 12th century. It shares Kagyu roots with Drukpa Kagyu but follows a different lineage.
