Drumhead

A tensioned membrane stretched across a drum shell that vibrates when struck, producing sound. Its material, thickness, and tension shape the drum’s tone and response.

Membrane vibration: The motion of a thin, flexible surface that carries waves when disturbed. A drumhead produces sound through patterns of vibration across its stretched surface.
Drum: A percussion instrument that produces sound when a stretched membrane or solid surface is struck. The head is the vibrating sound-producing surface of this instrument family.
Batter head: The drumhead intended to be struck during performance. This is the playing surface whose response and durability guide many head choices.
Animal skin drumhead: A drumhead made from prepared animal hide, traditionally used on many drums. It contrasts with synthetic heads through its sensitivity to humidity and natural tonal variation.
Tension (physics): The pulling force transmitted through a stretched material. Changing head tension changes its resonance frequencies and playing feel.
Drum shell: The hollow body of a drum that supports its heads and helps shape its sound. The shell holds the head under tension and contributes to the drum’s resonance.

Synthetic drumhead: A drumhead made from manufactured film, commonly polyester or polyamide. Synthetic film offers more stable tuning across changing temperature and humidity than hide.
Resonance: A strong response that occurs when a system is driven near one of its natural frequencies. The head’s resonant modes shape the pitches and sustain heard after a strike.
Drum hoop: A ring that holds a drumhead against the shell, usually under adjustable tension. The hoop secures the head and transfers tension from the tuning hardware.
