Drywall

Drywall is a wall or ceiling lining made from large panels, usually gypsum plaster faced with paper, attached to framing and finished at the joints.

Gypsum board: A building panel with a gypsum core and paper facings, used for interior walls and ceilings. This is the standard panel material sold as drywall.
Drywall installation: The process of measuring, cutting, fastening, and finishing gypsum-board panels on framing. It describes the sequence that turns individual panels into a continuous lining.
Moisture-resistant gypsum board: Gypsum board formulated to resist moisture absorption, commonly used in damp interior areas. It is selected where ordinary drywall may be damaged by intermittent dampness.
Lath and plaster: A traditional wall finish made by applying plaster over narrow strips or a solid substrate. It forms a continuous finish by wet application rather than joining factory-made panels.
Wall stud: A vertical framing member that supports walls and provides attachment points for finishes. Drywall panels are fastened to these members in framed walls.
Drywall finishing: The application and sanding of compound over drywall joints, corners, and fasteners to prepare surfaces for decoration. Finishing hides seams and makes the panel surface visually continuous.
Type X gypsum board: A gypsum-board type with additives and construction tested to provide enhanced fire resistance. It is used in assemblies designed to meet fire-resistance requirements.
Plasterboard: A sheet building material with a plaster core between facings, widely used for interior walls and ceilings. The term is commonly used for the same panel product called drywall in North America.
Drywall screw: A hardened screw with a bugle-shaped head designed to fasten gypsum board to wood or metal framing. It secures panels while allowing their heads to be covered during finishing.
Taping and jointing: The process of embedding tape in joint compound over seams between wallboard panels. This treatment reinforces the joints before later coats are applied.
