DSM-5

DSM-5 is the American Psychiatric Association’s 2013 classification and diagnostic manual for mental disorders. It sets diagnostic criteria and organizes disorders into categories.

Psychiatric diagnosis: The process of identifying mental disorders from symptoms, history, and clinical assessment. DSM-5 supplies standardized criteria used in this diagnostic process.
DSM-5 diagnostic criteria: The disorder-specific symptom, duration, and exclusion requirements in the fifth edition of the DSM. These criteria are the manual’s main tool for assigning diagnoses.
DSM-I: The American Psychiatric Association’s first Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, published in 1952. DSM-5 descends from this early system, which used broad psychodynamic descriptions.
ICD-11: The World Health Organization’s eleventh revision of the International Classification of Diseases. It is the main global diagnostic classification used alongside DSM-5.
Insurance coverage: Payment by an insurer for specified health services or treatments. In the United States, DSM diagnoses can support medical-necessity and reimbursement decisions.
Diagnostic criteria: Explicit requirements used to determine whether a condition meets a defined diagnosis. DSM-5 defines criteria for each listed disorder.
Differential diagnosis: The process of distinguishing among conditions that could explain a person’s symptoms. DSM-5 criteria help clinicians compare plausible diagnoses.
DSM-III: The 1980 edition of the DSM that introduced explicit operational diagnostic criteria. Its criteria-based approach shaped the structure retained by DSM-5.
DSM-5-TR: The 2022 text revision of DSM-5, updating descriptions and incorporating additions such as prolonged grief disorder. It is the current text revision, not the original 2013 edition.
Psychiatric epidemiology: The study of the distribution and determinants of mental disorders in populations. DSM-5 criteria shape how studies define and count disorders.
