DSM-IV

DSM-IV is the American Psychiatric Association’s 1994 manual for classifying and diagnosing mental disorders. It introduced explicit diagnostic criteria and a multiaxial system.

Diagnostic reliability: The consistency with which different assessors or repeated assessments assign the same diagnosis. Explicit DSM-IV criteria sought to improve agreement among clinicians and researchers.
Diagnostic criteria: Explicit conditions used to determine whether a person meets a diagnosis. DSM-IV specifies symptom thresholds and other rules for assigning each diagnosis.
DSM-III: The 1980 edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual that introduced explicit criteria and a multiaxial system. DSM-III established the diagnostic approach DSM-IV substantially revised and extended.
Research diagnosis: A diagnosis assigned under standardized definitions to support comparison across studies. DSM-IV categories enabled studies to recruit participants using shared diagnostic rules.
DSM-IV-TR: The 2000 text revision of DSM-IV, updating descriptive material while largely retaining its diagnostic criteria. It was the final updated form of DSM-IV before the DSM-5 revision.
Construct validity: The extent to which a measure or classification accurately represents the concept it claims to capture. Agreement on DSM-IV diagnoses did not by itself establish that its categories represented distinct disorders.
