Dua

Dua is an act of supplication in Islam, in which a person or community addresses God with a request, praise, gratitude, or appeal for guidance.

Allah: Allah is the Arabic name for God, used by Muslims and Arabic-speaking Christians and Jews. Dua addresses God, whose names and attributes shape how Muslims make supplication.
Qunut: Qunut is a supplication recited while standing during particular forms of Muslim ritual prayer. It is a specific supplication incorporated into salah.
Quran: The Quran is Islam’s central scripture, understood by Muslims as revelation from God to Muhammad. It contains direct commands and examples of supplication.
Liturgical prayer: Liturgical prayer is communal or individual worship conducted through a prescribed order and established texts. Dua belongs to a wider world of prayer but need not follow a set liturgy.
Names of God in Islam: The names of God in Islam are Quranic and traditional names expressing divine attributes. Supplicants often invoke particular names to frame what they ask of God.
Dhikr: Dhikr is the remembrance of God through devotional phrases, recitation, or inward attention in Islam. Dua often includes remembrance and praise, though it also makes requests.
Istikhara: Istikhara is a prayer seeking God’s guidance when facing a decision. It applies dua to uncertainty about a choice.
Supplication in the Quran: Supplication in the Quran includes prayers attributed to prophets and guidance on calling upon God. Quranic passages supply foundational language and models for dua.
Nafl prayer: Nafl prayer is voluntary Islamic ritual prayer performed beyond the obligatory salah. Both may be voluntary devotion, but nafl prayer retains salah’s ritual form.
Adab: Adab is the Islamic ideal of proper conduct, manners, and cultivated ethical behavior. Adab includes devotional etiquette associated with making supplication.
