DuBose Heyward

DuBose Heyward (1885–1940) was an American novelist, playwright, and poet whose novel Porgy inspired the stage play and opera Porgy and Bess.

Porgy: DuBose Heyward’s 1925 novel follows a disabled Black beggar in Charleston’s Catfish Row. This novel introduced the characters and setting later adapted for the stage.
Charleston, South Carolina: Charleston is a port city in South Carolina and the setting for much of Heyward’s writing. Its neighborhoods and local culture inform the world of Porgy.
