Dubstep

Dubstep is an electronic dance music genre that emerged in South London in the late 1990s, characterized by syncopated rhythms, deep bass, and spacious production.

Half-time rhythm: A rhythmic feel in which the perceived pulse moves at half the rate of the underlying beat. Many dubstep tracks place the snare on beats two and four of a half-time-feeling bar.
UK garage: A British electronic dance music genre that developed from US garage house and developed distinctive rhythms and vocals. Dubstep grew from UK garage scenes and inherited their club rhythms and production culture.
Skream: Oliver Jones, an English producer and DJ associated with dubstep’s early development and later popularization. His early productions helped define the genre before his later crossover success.
Brostep: A more aggressive, midrange-heavy branch of dubstep that rose to prominence in the United States in the late 2000s. It transformed dubstep’s restrained bass language into a louder, more abrasive festival sound.

2-step garage: A UK garage style with a broken, syncopated beat that omits or shifts some expected kick-drum hits. Its rhythm provided a direct template for early dubstep’s broken, spacious grooves.
Benga: A British producer and DJ who helped shape dubstep’s early sound in South London. His Croydon productions helped turn local experiments into a recognizable style.
Dubstep in popular music: The incorporation of dubstep rhythms and bass sounds into mainstream pop recordings. Pop producers adapted dubstep’s drops, wobble bass, and half-time beats for radio-oriented songs.
Grime: A British music genre combining electronic production with rapid MC delivery and influences from UK garage. Grime shares London’s underground context but centers MC performance more than dubstep does.
