Duchy of Athens

The Duchy of Athens was a Crusader state established in Greece in 1205. After the Battle of Halmyros in 1311, the Catalan Company took control and ruled it for most of the fourteenth century.

Fourth Crusade: A 1202–1204 military expedition that diverted to Constantinople and toppled the Byzantine Empire. Its conquest of Constantinople enabled western lords to seize territories in Greece.
Catalan Company: A company of mercenaries, largely Catalan and Aragonese, that campaigned in the eastern Mediterranean. It seized the duchy after defeating its Frankish rulers in 1311.
House of de la Roche: A Burgundian noble family that ruled the Frankish lordship and duchy of Athens in the thirteenth century. Its members established and expanded the Frankish regime before the Briennes.
Parthenon: A fifth-century BCE temple on the Athenian Acropolis, later adapted for Christian worship. Frankish and Catalan rulers used the Parthenon as a Catholic cathedral.
Boniface of Montferrat: An Italian nobleman who led the Kingdom of Thessalonica after the Fourth Crusade. He granted Athens and Thebes to Otto de la Roche in 1205.
Battle of Halmyros: A 1311 battle in central Greece in which the Catalan Company defeated Walter of Brienne's forces. The victory opened the way for Catalan rule in Athens and Thebes.
House of Brienne: A French noble dynasty whose members held the Duchy of Athens in the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries. Walter of Brienne's attempt to recover the duchy ended at Halmyros.
Acropolis of Athens: A fortified hill in Athens containing the Parthenon and other ancient monuments. Its fortifications served as the duchy's principal stronghold.
Otto de la Roche: A Burgundian lord who became the first ruler of the Frankish lordship of Athens. His conquest established the ruling house that became associated with the duchy.
Walter of Brienne: A Frankish lord of Athens killed while fighting the Catalan Company in 1311. His defeat ended the Brienne family's effective control of the duchy.
