Duchy of Brabant

The Duchy of Brabant was a polity in the medieval and early modern Low Countries, ruled by successive dynasties and centered on Brussels, Leuven, and Antwerp.

Duchy of Lower Lorraine: A medieval duchy in the western Holy Roman Empire, created in 959 and later fragmented among regional powers. Brabant’s rulers inherited the ducal title of Lower Lorraine in the twelfth century.
Joyous Entry of 1356: A charter of liberties granted by Joanna and Wenceslaus, setting conditions on their rule in Brabant. It became the duchy’s foundational statement of political rights and obligations.
Brussels: The capital of modern Belgium, historically a principal residence of Brabant’s rulers. Its court and institutions made it the duchy’s leading political center.

Leuven: A Belgian city that served as an early seat of the dukes of Brabant and a major medieval center. Its university and ducal connections made it one of Brabant’s defining cities.
Union of Utrecht: A 1579 alliance of northern provinces that formed the foundation of the Dutch Republic. Northern Brabant joined the union’s cause against Habsburg authority.
County of Hainaut: A medieval county in the southern Low Countries, west of Brabant. Hainaut was a neighboring principality with a distinct dynastic and territorial history.
