Duchy of Milan

A northern Italian state centered on Milan, established in 1395 and ruled by the Visconti and Sforza dynasties before passing to foreign powers until 1796.

Visconti family: A Milanese noble dynasty that ruled Milan from the 13th century until 1447. Gian Galeazzo Visconti transformed Milanese power into a duchy.
Milanese Senate: A governing and judicial institution of the Duchy of Milan, formalized under French rule in 1499. It became a central administrative body for the duchy’s territories.
Francesco Sforza: A condottiero who became duke of Milan in 1450 and founded Sforza rule. He restored ducal government after leading the city through political upheaval.
Italian Wars: A series of conflicts from 1494 to 1559 in which European powers fought for control of Italian territories. The duchy’s wealth and location made it a principal object of these wars.

Gian Galeazzo Visconti: The Milanese ruler who secured the title of duke in 1395 and expanded his territories. His imperial investiture formally established the Duchy of Milan.
Ducal Palace of Milan: A historic Milanese palace that served as a residence and seat of government for the city’s rulers. The palace housed the court and administration of the Visconti and Sforza.
Ludovico Sforza: A Sforza ruler of Milan from 1494 to 1499, known as Ludovico il Moro. His court made Milan a major center of Renaissance patronage before French conquest.
Battle of Pavia: A 1525 battle in which Imperial forces defeated the French army and captured Francis I. The victory strengthened Habsburg dominance over Milan and northern Italy.
Republic of Florence: A Florentine republican government that coexisted with periods of Medici rule. Florence’s shifting republican and Medici institutions differed from Milan’s hereditary dukes.
